What to do when Katoomba lookout car parks are full — Leura, Wentworth Falls, later return, train/bus options, and what never to do on the cliff edge.

Fine weekends, school holidays and coach-heavy middays regularly fill signed Echo Point / Three Sisters car parks. That is not a personal failure and it is not a licence to park on vegetation, across driveways, or in a way that blocks emergency access.
This unofficial guide is about keeping the day. You can still have a real Blue Mountains visit if you execute a named Plan B quickly. Always follow on-site signs and NSW National Parks / local parking rules for your date.
Decide the Plan B before you leave home
Groups that only invent a backup after 40 minutes of circling are already tired. On the night before a peak-day trip, say out loud: primary = Echo Point; Plan B = Leura cliff lookouts or Wentworth Falls platforms; Plan C = later return or village-only reset.
Write the Plan B on the same note as your reverse clock home. That is operator discipline, not pessimism.
What never to do
Do not park on vegetation, across driveways, in no-stopping zones, or in a way that blocks emergency vehicles. Do not leave bags visible. Do not “just duck in” on a verge because everyone else is doing it — rangers and local parking rules still apply.
Do not start a hard stair circuit as consolation because you could not park at Echo Point. Frustration plus unplanned descent is how days go badly.
Leura as the first overflow
Leura is minutes east and often has a different crowd rhythm. Gordon Falls–style lookouts and village streets can still deliver sandstone, valley air and a café reset without the Echo Point coach pulse.

Wentworth Falls as a full Plan B day
If Katoomba is gridlocked, Wentworth Falls lookouts can become the main event — waterfall amphitheatre, picnic pacing, formed paths. That is a successful Blue Mountains day, not a consolation prize.
Hard passes stay status-first. A parking fail is not a reason to start National Pass without official open status, fitness and daylight.
Later return or skip the postcard this visit
Sometimes the calm move is lunch in Katoomba village and a later lookout attempt, or Blackheath / Govetts Leap if you still have highway margin. A two-day trip solves parking more reliably than one frantic Saturday.
If you only had a half-day and both lots failed, village time plus a short formed path still counts. You can come back for the Three Sisters without teaching the group that illegal parking is how the mountains work.

Should I wait in the car park loop until a space appears?
A short wait can work midweek. On peak Saturdays, looping often costs more than driving to Leura or Wentworth Falls. Decide a time cap (for example 10 minutes) before you arrive.
Is the train a better Plan B than another car park?
If you have not left Sydney yet and parking stress is the whole problem, the Blue Mountains line plus a local transfer can beat hunting for a cliff-edge space. If you are already in Katoomba with a car, a named lookout Plan B is usually faster.
