A single night near the cliffs changes the trip: you can do Echo Point without a 6am Sydney departure, or wake in Blackheath for Govetts Leap light. The wrong base is not a disaster, but it wastes the reason you stayed.

Choose the base that matches the walk, not the brochure
Stay near the cliff strip you will actually walk. Katoomba serves Echo Point and Katoomba village logistics. Blackheath serves Govetts Leap, cooler nights and canyon-country mornings. Mixing them on a single night without a plan creates extra highway time you could have spent on platforms.
If you are not sure, Katoomba (or Leura) is the safer first-night default. Blackheath shines on night two or when you already know you want upper-mountains contrast.
Katoomba: first-timer convenience
You are close to the postcard, the coach loop, and the largest services strip. That concentration is both the gift and the noise. Evening food is easier; morning Echo Point is realistic without another long drive from Sydney.
Expect weekend intensity. If that will wreck sleep, Leura is usually the first pivot — same escarpment story, slightly softer tempo.
Blackheath: cooler air and Grose Valley mornings
Blackheath is where the trip becomes an upper-mountains trip. Govetts Leap is a short hop; the village is smaller; nights are often colder than Katoomba. Midweek cafés can close earlier — check hours before you plan a late dinner and a dawn walk.
Grand Canyon–class walks still need official status, fitness and an early start. Staying in Blackheath does not make a hard circuit casual.
Leura and Mount Victoria as specialist bases
Leura sits between Katoomba convenience and a calmer high street. Use it when Echo Point is the goal but Katoomba beds are full or loud. Mount Victoria is a quieter western fringe — pair it with Blackheath walks, not as a first-timer’s only stop from Sydney.
Official NPWS camping and park cabins are a different product: book only on official channels. Commercial hotels and guesthouses on this site may use disclosed Booking.com links.
A simple overnight decision
One night, first visit, want Three Sisters: Katoomba or Leura. Two nights: Katoomba then Blackheath. Walkers chasing Grose light: Blackheath. Park camping: NSW National Parks only.
Then open the stay hub and the two-day itinerary. Pack layers either way — cliff nights surprise people who packed for Sydney CBD.

Is Katoomba too busy to stay?
It is busier, and that is the point for many first nights: food, services and Echo Point access. If you want quiet streets, look at Leura or Blackheath instead of assuming Katoomba is the only option.
Can I skip Katoomba and only stay in Blackheath?
Yes if your goal is Grose Valley and cooler air. Most first-timers still want one Echo Point visit — you can do that as a day trip from Blackheath or on the drive in.
