Two days: Katoomba then Blackheath
Best for: Overnight visitors who want icons + upper mountains
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Day 1 Katoomba/Leura lookouts and a moderate walk. Overnight locally. Day 2 Govetts Leap and optional Grand Canyon if open — without racing back for a late Sydney dinner.

One night in the mountains buys you the thing day-trippers rarely get: Echo Point without the desperate clock, plus a genuine upper-mountains morning at Blackheath. Day 1 is icons and settling in; Day 2 is Grose Valley scale and, if you earn it, one serious walk.
Book a commercial base with parking if you can (Katoomba, Leura or Blackheath). Park camping and official NPWS accommodation are never affiliated on this site — use official channels for those products.
Keep Day 1 moderate so Day 2 is possible. Grand Canyon is optional and status-dependent — Govetts Leap alone is still worth the overnight. Leave daylight margin for the drive home on Day 2.
Verify alerts both mornings. Overnight plans fail when Day 1 becomes two hard walks and Day 2 is a write-off.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Before you go
Book base + name Day 2 ambition
Confirm accommodation and parking. Decide Day 2 Plan A (Govetts + optional Grand Canyon if open) vs Plan B (Govetts + village only). Pack overnight bag plus day-pack kit for walks. Check NPWS alerts the night before Day 1.
Day 1 morning
Echo Point & optional cliff segment
Icons first without rushing. Then one moderate cliff segment if energy allows. Do not empty the tank on Giant Stairway or National Pass on Day 1 if you want a real Day 2.
Day 1 afternoon
Village + check-in + early night
Food in Katoomba or Leura. Check into accommodation. Early night beats dawn regrets. Review Day 2 weather and NPWS status for any hard walk you hoped to do.
Day 2 morning
Blackheath & Grose Valley
Govetts Leap lookout for scale and cooler upper-mountains air. If Grand Canyon (or another hard walk) is open, fit and desired — start early with water, food and turnaround times. If not, longer lookout and village time still justify the overnight.
Day 2 afternoon
Soft finish + daylight drive home
Coffee in Blackheath or a second easy lookout only if margin remains. Do not stack a second hard canyon. Drive toward Sydney with daylight margin; tired overnight groups make poor highway decisions.

Parking & access tips
- Prefer accommodation with parking; cliff precincts are not for overnight car camping.
- Day-use lookout lots still fill on Day 2 — start early for Blackheath if busy weather is fine.
- Never leave bags visible in cars at trailheads.
- If Day 2 hard walk parking is full, default to Govetts lookout only — still a win.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Stacking two hard canyon days
- Dawn starts if you arrived late Day 1 exhausted
- National Pass Day 1 + Grand Canyon Day 2 for unfit groups
- Late Day 2 departure that forces night driving after hard walking
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Visitors who can book one night near the cliffs
- Groups who want icons and upper-mountains contrast without two full Sydney day trips
- Walkers who will keep Day 1 moderate on purpose
Decision gates
- Day 1 hard walk temptation: protect Day 2 instead
- Day 2 hard walk closed: Govetts Leap + village is enough
- Bad weather Day 2: short lookouts and earlier home — do not invent status
What success looks like
- Two distinct mountain experiences (Katoomba strip + Blackheath scale)
- Safe drive home with daylight margin
- Optional hard walk only if open and earned

- Echo Point & Three Sisters lookoutsThe classic Blue Mountains postcard stop: sealed and formed lookout paths with views to the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley. Expect crowds on fine weekends and tour-coach peaks.
- Govetts Leap lookoutOne of the great upper-mountains viewpoints over the Grose Valley. Ideal second-day contrast to Echo Point, or a misty-morning photography stop.
- Grand Canyon walking track (Blackheath)A popular Blackheath circuit descending into a narrow canyon environment with stairs, creek ambience and a solid climb out. Not a lookout stroll — treat it as a full half-day walk.
